Full-time and part-time faculty members are formally evaluated annually by their school dean/department chair, except if an unusual circumstance makes completing an evaluation impossible. The evaluation includes a review of student responses on student course evaluations, teaching effectiveness, the performance of non-teaching university assignments such as committee service, scholarly productivity, community service activities, professional activities related to professional growth, commitment to the overall university program, and compliance with university policies, rules, and procedures. The evaluation includes a faculty member-dean/chair conference discussing these matters. Evaluation results are shared with the senior vice president for Academic Administration and the Faculty Promotions Committee, and a copy of the evaluation will be sent to the Human Resources director to be included in the faculty member’s personnel file.
The university conducts student course evaluations at the end of each course. The purpose of the evaluations is primarily to provide an opportunity for students to render anonymous opinions to their faculty about the quality of instruction they are receiving and to encourage faculty to use this information constructively. In addition, student course evaluations are used as one component of the promotion process and may be used as needed to counsel a faculty member whose classroom performance does not meet expectations.
The Faculty Affairs Committee constructs student course evaluation questions. The questionnaire is delivered online. All faculty members, including adjunct and contract faculty, are subject to evaluation in all classes.
Schools/departments may also construct questionnaires and conduct evaluations for their purposes, but not in place of the approved online evaluation.
The results of each faculty member’s evaluation can be viewed by the faculty member, the school dean/department chairman, and the senior vice president for Academic Administration. They are also shared with the Faculty Promotions Committee.
Adjunct faculty members are formally evaluated annually by their dean/department chair, except if an unusual circumstance makes completing an evaluation impossible. Because the scope of their relationship with the university is different from full-time faculty, their evaluation is limited to student course evaluations and teaching effectiveness. Results of the assessment are shared with the senior vice president for Academic Administration.
