Roller skating, inline skating, skateboarding, longboarding, scootering and other similar board-type activities have a risk of injury or damage. Consequently, you perform these activities at your own risk. The university assumes no liability or responsibility for injuries received while riding on university property.

Students who choose to assume the risk of one of these activities on campus are to abide by the following guidelines. They are to

  1. Wear protective gear, including a helmet, required wrist guards, elbow pads, and kneepads.
  2. Provide right-of-way to pedestrians.
  3. Stop at all pedestrian roadways crossings, check for cross traffic, and proceed with crossing only when it is safe to do so.
  4. Avoid riding on roads, driveways, parking lots, the running/walking track, or in areas where vehicles are normally driven and operated.

While the above are recommended guidelines for skaters, skateboarders and cyclists, the following activities are to be avoided at all times on campus:

  1. Riding inside buildings
  2. Riding, jumping, or sliding on stairs, railings, curb edges, benches, walls;
  3. Trick riding.
  4. Hanging onto or being pulled by any moving motorized or pedaled vehicle.

MOTORIZED OR ELECTRIC SCOOTERS/LONGBOARDS, ETC.

The following policies pertain only to motorized bicycles, longboards, skateboards, and scooters.

  1. Anyone who is using a motorized or electric version of one of the above conveyances MUST, at a minimum, be wearing a helmet.
  2. Because the Promenade is frequently a busy thoroughfare and because it is not wide enough to create a bicycle lane, motorized conveyances are prohibited from use there during the hours of 7:30 am to 5 pm Monday through Thursday and 7:30 am to 12 pm on Friday. Students, employees, and guests are required to disembark and walk or carry these conveyances while on the Promenade. Students may use these devices on the Promenade during the hours not listed above and on weekends.
  3. All of the above conveyances are banned from being parked or stored inside all University buildings.
  4. When charging the batteries of these conveyances, one is required to abide by the following safety measures:
    • The device may not be left unattended while it is charging;
    • Only the charger that came with the device may be used to charge it;
    • Manufacturer’s recommendations for charging are to be followed.
  5. On other sidewalks besides the Promenade, users of these devices must travel at no more than 10 miles per hour.
  6. During inclement weather, when sidewalks are wet from rain or snow, the use of these devices are banned from all of campus.
  7. Parking of these devices may NOT occur in parking spaces, in buildings, or on lawns.
  8. Failure to abide by any of these polices will result in a fine of $200.
