Description

This fundamental course provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to be safe, comfortable, and environmentally responsible while backpacking in a wilderness environment. Sound outdoor leadership principles coupled with Leave No Trace backcountry ethics provide the philosophical and practical foundations of this course. Topics include equipment use and selection, meal planning and preparation, orienteering and land navigation, as well as safety and risk management. An extended off-campus field experience of up to four days may be required.
