Mission Statement

The mission of the School of Business is the pursuit of excellence in Christ-centered business education.



Goals / Objectives / Outcomes

The courses and programs offered by the School of Business are designed to prepare students for business-related careers in the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors and/or for further graduate education.

The objectives of the school are:

  1. Students will be able to describe the principle concepts, theories, and practices in and the interrelationship between the functional areas of business within the context of the free enterprise system.
  2. Students will be able to describe the global environment of business.
  3. Students will be able to evaluate legal and ethical principles of business within a context of Christian Biblical Foundations and apply them to organizational decision-making.
  4. Students will be able to apply decision support tools to business decision making.
  5. Students will be able to construct and present effective oral and written forms of professional communication.
  6. Students will be able to apply knowledge of business concepts and functions in a strategic and integrated manner.

Assessment

To help School of Business graduates evaluate their academic progress and to aid the School in evaluating teaching effectiveness, all students who major in business-related fields will be required to:

  1. Participate in the university-wide testing program in general education.
  2. Take the major field test in business prepared by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) during the last semester of their academic program. This test may be integrated into an upper division course and may constitute part of the grade for that course.
  3. Complete teacher evaluations for courses taken each semester.
  4. Complete the Senior Exit Survey interview with the Dean prior to graduation.


Accreditation

Southern Adventist University has received specialized accreditation for its business and business-related programs through the International Accreditation Council for Business Education (IACBE), Olathe, Kansas. The following degree programs are accredited by the IACBE:

  • Bachelor of Business Administration degrees
  • Bachelor of Science degrees
  • Master of Business Administration


Admission

Students wishing to major in business must apply to the School of Business by taking BUAD 201 upon completion of earning a grade of C or higher in ACCT 222, ENGL 102, and one of the following math classes: MATH 112, MATH 122, MATH 125, or MATH 191 and achieving a cumulative GPA in these courses of 2.25


Students pursuing an A.S. degree must apply to the School of Business by taking BUAD 200 upon completion of ACCT 222 and ENGL 101 with a minimum grade of C in each.



Residence

Residency Requirements

Business Programs:

At the program level, the following residency requirements and courses specified MUST BE TAKEN in residence at Southern Adventist University. Additional degree-specific residency requirements may be applicable.

  • B.B.A. Degrees - a minimum of 39 hours (21 hours upper-division core and 18 hours emphasis) of required business courses (not including required cognates) to be taken in residence.
  • B.S. Business Administration Degree and Combined Degrees - 24 hours of upper division (300-400 level) required business courses (not including required cognates) to be taken in residence.
  • A.S. Degrees - 15 hours of required business courses to be taken in residence.
  • Minors - 9 hours of required business courses to be taken in residence.

B.B.A./B.S. Core: 21 Hours of 300-400

  • B.B.A./B.S. Core requires a minimum of 21 credit hours of upper division courses, including
    • BUAD 485 - Missional Business 3 hours (Must be taken in senior year)
    • BUAD 488 - Seminar in Business Administration 1 hour
    • MGNT 464 - Business Strategies (W) 3 hours (Must be taken in last 12 hours of degree completion)

Transfer Credit

Transfer credits at the same level (lower division/upper division) as Southern Catalog listings will be accepted from an accredited college/university.

  • Students transferring 24 hours or more may petition a maximum of six lower division hours to be considered as fulfillment of COMPARABLE upper division degree requirements in the business core or business emphasis.
  • Students transferring a total of 36 hours or more may petition a maximum of nine lower division hours to be considered as fulfillment of COMPARABLE upper division degree requirements in the business core or business emphasis.
  • Transfer credits are credits earned prior to enrolling at Southern Adventist University.

Lower division transfer credits approved as fulfilling upper division degree or emphasis requirements will not reduce the total number of upper division hours required by the university.



Progression

  • Students must complete the requirements of BUAD 201 prior to enrolling in upper division business courses.
  • Courses with grade lower than "C" in any required course of the degree must be repeated.


Graduation Requirements

All Business Degrees:

  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.25 in the major.
  • Courses with grades lower than "C" (2.00) in the major studies and cognates must be repeated.
  • ETS Major Field Test in Business
  • Senior Exit Interview with the Dean


Additional Information

Program Dismissal

  • Students may be dismissed from the School of Business. Dismissal from the School of Business precludes earning a degree from the School of Business.

Students wishing to pursue a career in public accounting as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) will be required by most states to have earned a minimum of 150 credit hours of education in order to sit for the CPA exam.  The 150 hours may be comprised of undergraduate hours or a combination of undergraduate and graduate hours.
